The last battlecruiser built for the Royal Navy, the HMS Hood began its service in 1920. During World War II, the Hood and the DKM Bismarck faced head on during the Battle of Denmark Strait (May 24, 1941). Less than ten minutes after opening fire, the Bismarck — which had been pursued by the Royal Navy vessel for days — connected with a 38mm shell and broke the Hood in two, killing 1,415 men.
