Though neither vessel survived World War II, the IJN Yamato and her sister-ship the Musashi were the heaviest and most powerfully armed battleships ever constructed. Commissioned in December of 1941 - one week after the Attack at Pearl Harbor - the Yamato was built with a dizzying assortment of firepower to help combat the United States' numeric naval advantage. Her final mission, in the spirit of Japanese Kamikaze fighter pilots, was to travel to Okinawa and defend the island until successful or destroyed. The Yamato was sunk on April 7, 1945.
